CITY DECLARES “FANIME DAY” IN HONOR OF FANIMECON’S PLATINUM ANNIVERSARY
Convention’s 20-Year Milestone to Generate Over $10.5M to the San Jose Community

SAN JOSE, CA (May 23, 2014) – The City of San Jose is declaring May 23, 2014 “Fanime Day” in recognition of the convention’s platinum anniversary. The City of San Jose, FanimeCon and Team San Jose officials today celebrated by kicking off the event with opening ceremonies at the San Jose McEnery Convention Center. With more than 24,500 attendees, 6,000 hotel room nights booked, visitor spending on food, entertainment, lodging, shopping, sightseeing and local transit, FanimeCon is expected to generate an economic impact of $10.5 million in visitor’s spending to San Jose’s local economy.

“The City of San Jose is proud to proclaim ‘Fanime Day’ and partner with Team San Jose and FanimeCon to celebrate their impact on our local economy,” said Councilmember Pete Constant. “San Jose’s vibrant downtown, cultural offerings and diverse entertainment makes San Jose an excellent destination for FanimeCon’s attendees and fans.” Councilmember Constant issued the proclamation on behalf of Mayor Chuck Reed and members of the San Jose City Council, declaring May 23 “Fanime Day” at opening ceremonies that kick off the weekend’s events. Following the proclamation, the Japanese Consulate led a Coming of Age ceremony signifying Japan’s legal age of 20. FanimeCon, Northern California’s largest anime, manga, and related arts and cultures convention takes place May 23 – 26, 2014 at the San Jose Convention Center.

“We’re delighted that the community values our event and we are thrilled with the results so far of this year’s convention. San Jose is a great destination and home for us.” said Milton Le, director of communications and marketing of FanimeCon. “Twenty years is a pivotal milestone for us and as one of the last three remaining Japantowns in the U.S., San Jose is a perfect location for our convention.”

This year’s beach-themed convention has paired a lineup of fan favorite events with a cast of renowned and emerging anime celebrities to provide a memorable experience for the convention’s 20th anniversary. This year’s guests of honor at FanimeCon include voice actors/actresses, animators, directors, returning guests of honor and many more.

“We appreciate the business this convention brings to San Jose year after year,” said Karolyn Kirchgesler, CEO of Team San Jose.” It’s great fun to see FanimeCon’s eccentric costumed characters transform downtown San Jose into a virtual anime set. Fans love how they can walk from the convention center to dining and entertainment, and locals love seeing what characters they might be sitting next to at San Jose restaurants, galleries and theaters.”

FanimeCon’s 2014 schedule of events includes a list of fan favorites:

  • This year’s MusicFest includes performances by headliner Home Made Kazoku, who anime fans will recognize from their music in various anime titles such as Eureka 7, Naruto, the theme song of Naruto Shippuden: the Movie, and many more. Also performing is Indo-Canadian singer, composer and lyricist Raj Ramayya who has provided the soundtracks to several video games.
