Tournament Rules

  1. Tournament Length

    This tournament is double-elimination (two total match losses)

  2. Set Length

    All tournament sets will be a best-of-three (first-to-two wins), until the top eight rounds of the tournament bracket, at which point tournament sets will be best-of-five (first-to-three wins).The rules below apply to both set formats.

  3. Set Procedure

    1. Players select their characters. Either player may elect to do double-blind character selection as detailed in section 4.
    2. Players will then use Random Select to determine all stages (see Game Rules section 1)
    3. The first game is played.
    4. The winner of the previous game must keep their character.
    5. The loser of the previous game may change their character and/or choose a new random stage.
    6. The next game is played.
    7. Repeat steps four through six for all subsequent games until the set is complete.
  4. Double-blind Character Selection

    Either player may request that a double-blind selection occur. In this situation, a pool captain, referee, or third party will be told, in secret, of each player’s character choices for the first round. Both players are to then select their first round character, with the selected pool captain, referee, or third party validating the character selections.

  5. Pausing and the Home Button

    Pausing once the game has started, either with the pause button or the PS4 home button, is only legal for the purpose of summoning a Tournament Official for cases of controller malfunction, external interference, or as deemed necessary at the discretion of Tournament Officials. All other pauses will incur a round loss to the player who pauses the game,or a game loss, if the round results in a decisive win.

  6. Stalling

    Stalling, or intentionally making the game unplayable, is a bannable offense at the discretion of Tournament Officials. Stalling includes, but is not limited to, becoming invisible, movement without any attack animation for an extended period of time, and reaching a position that the player’s character can never be reached by the opposing character. Stalling will result in a forfeit of the game for the player that initiated the action.

  7. Draws

    If a game draw occurs because of double K.O. or timeout on the game screen, the game will not be scored, and both players will replay the tied game with the same character selections.

  8. Character Color/Color Selection

    If there is a dispute over character colors and/or weapon color schemes (example: both players choose the same character and weapon), the players will play one game of rock paper scissors to determine who gets the color.

  9. Color Request Clause

    Players may request that their opponent change colors to accommodate for color blindness. The request must be made before the game starts. For example, a player can request that Astaroth choose Color Three in order to distinguish between the character’s features.

  10. Warm-ups

    Warm-up periods, button checks, and “handwarmers” may not exceed 60 seconds on the game clock. Violation of this rule may result in a game loss at the discretion of the Tournament Officials.

  11. Tardiness

    Anyone who is not present for their set 10 minutes past the scheduled start time of the round is subject to a total disqualification from the event.

    1. Custom Characters & Others

      No player may compete using custom or altered characters, including all Create-a-Soul character creations, or Inferno.

    2. Patch

      FanimeCon 2022 will use whichever patch is currently live at 11:59 pm PST on Wednesday May 25th, 2022.
